A blaze broke out on Oct 31 at a Rosneft oil depot located several kilometers from Sheremetyevo Airport shortly after Russian authorities issued air raid alerts for the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that several drones heading toward the capital were intercepted, though footage from monitoring channels showed a column of smoke rising near the refinery grounds following the activity.
The security threats prompted Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports to impose flight restrictions, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded in terminals. The disruptions follow a larger wave of incursions on Oct 30 that forced the closure of all four of Moscow’s major airports and resulted in more than 370 canceled or delayed flights.
