Latest results from the 2026 general election indicate that New Zealand’s ruling center-right National party is assembling a government coalition to retain power. Data from the Electoral Commission released as 24% of ballots were tallied show that while National is moving to secure a majority, the center-left opposition Labour party currently holds the lead in the total popular vote.
The composition of the next government may depend on the centrist Opportunity party, which is on track to cross the electoral threshold to enter parliament. With 65 seats required to govern, early counts at 18% of the vote showed National holding 41 seats to Labour’s 35. Opposition lawmaker McNulty stated that National’s level of support has exceeded initial expectations.
