The Taiwanese government will introduce legislation on Thursday to support its domestic equities after a sell-off in semiconductor shares drove the TAIEX index down about 9%. A government stabilization fund may also convene an extraordinary meeting if market confidence continues to decline or trading becomes disorderly, the country’s deputy finance minister said.
The rout is part of a larger decline in Asian artificial intelligence stocks following Democratic gains in the U.S. midterms, which raised investor concerns about tighter regulation of the sector. The downturn pushed Japan’s Nikkei 225 officially into a bear market, falling 20% from its June peak, while South Korea’s KOSPI plummeted 8.7% at one point during the session.
