The gauge used to measure equity market uncertainty ended Nov 5 at its third-highest closing value since early 2025, as investors sought protection from the S&P 500’s biggest plunge in more than a year. The $VIX increased 70% during the session, marking the third-largest one-day percentage gain for the CBOE Volatility Index since it began tracking data in 1990.
The spike in hedging costs drove the index to a close that has been surpassed only twice in the previous 387 trading days. The index serves as a measure of expected volatility for the S&P 500 over the following 30 days, and it has recorded daily data since 1990.
