Tighter financing conditions for AI data center developers have sparked fears that chip demand will decline as companies are forced to cut capital spending. The Semiconductor Index has fallen 17% since Oct 6, and some analysts warn that the volatility in the neocloud sector could push the S&P 500 back to its early June lows, a potential 5% drop from Friday’s close. Shares of AI cloud providers CoreWeave, IREN, and Nebius have fallen 41%, 40%, and 36% respectively since the same date.
The equity slump reflects stress in the credit markets, where unsecured notes for CoreWeave due in 2031 and 2032 now yield more than 15%. The provider’s credit default swap spread has risen above 11%, a level typically seen as indicative of financial distress, while the cost of insuring its debt has more than doubled since June. Broader market pressure has also hit larger tech firms, with credit default swaps on bonds for Meta, Oracle, and Nvidia hitting record spreads last week.
