Four of the largest tech companies in the U.S. have entered bear market territory, meaning their share prices have fallen at least 20% from their all-time highs, as a selloff in artificial intelligence shares intensified. The market correction has erased $4 trillion in combined valuation from the group known as the Magnificent Seven, with Google and Meta posting losses of 30% and 22% respectively. The downturn is part of a broader market slide that has seen more than 60% of S&P 500 stocks drop at least 20% from their peaks.
The volatility follows a rotation by investors out of crowded AI positions and into defensive stocks and quality names. This shift left only Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple in positive territory for 2026, while a basket of AI leader shares surrendered nearly all of the 100% year-to-date gains it had posted by the end of June. In the last two weeks alone, the AI stock basket has trailed the non-AI portion of the S&P 500 by 22%.
