The state-owned energy provider of Qatar is negotiating additional long-term natural gas contracts to secure its supply chain and safeguard revenue if the Strait of Hormuz is shut down. The CEO of QatarEnergy announced the company intends to sign more agreements with U.S. and international suppliers by the end of 2026, with a goal to bring its total overseas intake well above the 7 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) currently secured. This strategy to build a trading hedge is intended to generate returns from price spikes during regional disruptions without the capital expenditure required for new infrastructure, such as bypass pipelines, which the company ruled out for security reasons.
