A widening selloff of artificial intelligence stocks expanded into Asian markets on Friday, impacting indices in South Korea, Japan, and China. The decline wiped roughly $500B from the market value of Alphabet after the company’s expenditures on AI pushed its cash flow below zero, while Intel shares dropped 23% in after-hours trading and Amazon shares fell 7%.
In South Korea, the KOSPI fell as much as 5%, and Japan’s Nikkei fell over 2%, as investors weighed high-profile earnings and inflation data following a steady interest rate decision from the Fed. The selloff also pushed China’s CSI300 toward its worst monthly performance in 10 years, coinciding with a shift of billions of dollars from technology equities into banking, health care, and consumer product stocks.
