Chipmakers led a modest bounce in U.S. equities on Friday, lifting the Nasdaq Composite 1.09% and the S&P 500 0.3% as dip buyers returned to the semiconductor sector. The recovery was not widespread, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.5% to close 237 points lower. The modest gains followed a session in which the S&P 500 closed at 7,354, barely maintaining its 200 day moving average of 7,323.
The rebound comes after a massive Thursday rout that erased $3.7T in U.S. market value, triggered by a Democratic sweep of the midterms. Investors sold off tech and chip stocks on concerns that the election results would lead to tighter regulations on data centers and artificial intelligence, a move that pushed the Nasdaq Composite into correction territory. While some indices recovered Friday, the broader market remains on track for weekly losses.
