President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces launched an aerial assault hitting 13 regions across Ukraine, with a heavy concentration of ballistic missiles striking the Kyiv area to disrupt power and heating. The operation utilized 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles, damaging residential buildings, the Northern Bridge in the capital, and substations that connect the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants to central Ukraine. Nine people were injured in the strikes, including one child.
The attacks follow warnings from Ukrainian and U.S. intelligence that Russia was preparing for a wave of strikes against the energy grid and bridges over the Dnipro River. As the country prepares for winter, Zelenskyy asked the U.S. Congress to prioritize bilateral support and accelerate the delivery of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems to prevent total blackouts.
