Saudi Arabia has entered talks to establish a ceasefire with Houthi rebels after the group seized control of the Bab al-Mandeb shipping lane and targeted oil tankers in the Red Sea. The rebels have requested an initial payment of $51 billion to end the hostilities and compensate for a long-term Saudi blockade and air campaign, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
Beyond the financial demand, the Houthis are seeking formal recognition of their rule in Yemen, a move that would place an Iran-armed force on the kingdom’s southern border. Negotiators have since signaled that a complete Saudi exit from the conflict could potentially cost hundreds of billions of dollars. Neither Saudi nor Houthi leaders responded to requests for comment.
