Vessels crossing the Red Sea can now request safe transit through an electronic clearance process run by Houthi rebels. Ship captains must submit details about their vessel and formally declare that the ship has no ties to the U.K., U.S., Israel, or Saudi Arabia to be eligible for safe passage.
The clearance system typically provides a response within 24 hours of the request. Once approved, the rebels issue navigation instructions and a transit permit that is valid for a 7 day period.
