Non-essential U.S. personnel and their dependents were instructed to exit the kingdom to avoid safety risks linked to escalating regional hostilities. The directive from the State Department, which took effect Oct 23, was prompted by ballistic missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure and airports. As a result of the security threat, U.S. employees remaining in Saudi Arabia now need special authorization from the Chief of Mission to use any airport in the country.
The evacuation order comes as Riyadh reports the destruction of multiple Houthi projectiles, including a ballistic missile in the southern region and a drone over Medina. The Houthis have denied targeting Medina and Mecca, though they claim to have fired salvos at international airports in Riyadh and Dammam, and the oil refineries at Ras Tanura and Rabigh. Saudi Arabia reported that shrapnel from intercepted missiles caused minor injuries to a citizen and material damage to buildings in the capital.
