Brent crude futures rose $3.67, or 3.88%, to settle at $98.29 a barrel on Thursday, recouping a fraction of a four day slump that still leaves the benchmark on pace for its worst week since the COVID pandemic in April 2020. Prices recovered from Wednesday’s $94.62 close as analysts noted that the US war with Iran shows no immediate signs of ending and global refined product inventories remain tight.
The Thursday rebound followed a $23 a barrel drop in prompt Brent from Friday’s $117.64 settlement through Wednesday, when Brent fell 8.67% and West Texas Intermediate dropped 8.29% to $88.12 after Democrats swept the House and Senate and Vice President JD Vance blamed the Republican defeat on the Iran war. Despite Thursday’s bounce in crude, GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said Wednesday’s 20.7 cent drop in RBOB gasoline futures to $2.73 a gallon and 32.5 cent decline in ultra low sulfur diesel to $4.21 a gallon could push US retail averages down from near $3.99 to $3.65 a gallon for gasoline and from $6.23 to $5.50 for diesel in the coming weeks.
