Syria and Saudi Arabia issued a joint call to stop military activities that endanger cargo and tanker traffic in the Middle East’s most critical waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. The two nations cautioned that further escalation near Bab al-Mandeb could disrupt global energy supplies and harm the international economy, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
The security warning followed a summit in Riyadh between interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, their second meeting in less than a month. During the visit, the nations finalized a strategic military pact and signed 10 development deals backed by $403 million in concessional loans. The funding is earmarked for Syrian infrastructure, including the reconstruction of the Aleppo power plant, health facilities, and a new financial service center.
