The government of Oman and the Chinese leadership issued a joint statement on Monday urging the restoration of secure maritime transit through the Persian Gulf’s primary shipping lane. The communique, released during an unprecedented visit by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to Beijing, stated that the Strait of Hormuz should be safely open to navigation and return to normal operations to ensure the security of trade.
The formal demand follows a decline in traffic through the strait, with the head of the International Maritime Organization reporting that only about 12 vessels crossed the waterway last week. During the talks, President Xi Jinping warned against turning the Gulf into a battleground for geopolitical rivalry between global powers and pledged that China would coordinate with Arab nations to restore peace through diplomatic means.
