The ships identified by the maritime intelligence firm Windward displayed unusual behaviors, such as circling and disabling their tracking systems, while navigating near the underwater telecommunications lines that support the regional internet. This activity, reported by the Financial Times, involved a group of vessels linked to Iran, including three tankers that are currently under international sanctions.
The affected cables provide the primary internet and financial connectivity for Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. The presence of the ships follows threats from Tehran to target digital infrastructure and data centers if the U.S. and Israel launch new attacks. While analysts suggest the vessels may have been conducting surveillance or preparing for sabotage, no damage to the cables or placement of explosives has been confirmed.
