Physical oil costs have plummeted relative to futures contracts in recent weeks, resulting in a market that is now balanced to slightly oversupplied. The benchmark Dated Brent is trading below prompt Brent futures, a shift that has pushed the front half of the Brent CFD curve into contango.
The decline removes a record price gap between the physical and futures markets that expanded throughout September and early October. This contraction, centered on the most imminent delivery dates, coincided with a drop in charter rates for crude and heavy fuel oil tankers following a price peak in mid-October.
