The current national weekly average for regular gasoline in the US hit $4.27 on Nov 2, one day before the midterm elections. This increase pushed the cumulative average for President Donald Trump’s second term to $3.472 per gallon, surpassing the $3.471 average recorded during Joe Biden’s four-year presidency, AAA data indicates.
The price surge is attributed to the war in Iran and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which drove pump costs to a peak of $4.50 in May. Regular fuel prices have risen about 37%, or $1.16 per gallon, from the $3.11 average seen when Trump took office on Jan 20, 2025. This trend follows Trump’s campaign pledges to reduce energy costs and coincides with diesel prices hitting a weekly record of $6.53 a gallon in September.
