The former president said he will remain neutral in the fight to decide who will head the Republican caucus in the House after the party’s midterm defeat, noting that the candidates in the race are “all good people.” Donald Trump’s decision to decline an endorsement follows the emergence of a contest for the House Minority Leader post between House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan for the 120th Congress.
The leadership battle began after Speaker Mike Johnson told staff on Wednesday that he would not run for the position following the loss of the Republican majority on Tuesday. Jordan, who was the first member to enter the race, campaigned in a letter to colleagues on the need for a “clear plan” and his experience in oversight. Scalise similarly launched his bid in a formal letter, promising a “consensus-driven” approach to return the GOP to a majority.
