The Chinese government has verified that it is maintaining communication with Washington and Moscow to coordinate a potential first-ever three-way summit between Presidents Xi Jinping, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning confirmed the discussions on Nov 4, indicating the meeting would likely be held on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Shenzhen on Nov 18-19.
The Kremlin stated that preparations for the encounter are already underway and that the three nations agree such a meeting would be beneficial. While the US has sought a forum to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, Beijing has previously resisted a trilateral focus on the conflict. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Xi recently characterized the war as a European issue that requires European participation at the negotiating table, denying earlier rumors that the APEC summit would be used for specific Ukraine peace talks.
