Sergey Lavrov entered the United States on Oct 30 to represent Russia at the G20 foreign ministers’ summit in Atlanta. Moscow stated that the foreign minister will use his scheduled speech at the two day gathering to oppose the current regime of international sanctions against Russia and advocate for the establishment of a “multipolar world” in global governance.
The meeting, hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and attended by officials such as the EU’s Kaja Kallas, takes place as diplomatic efforts to restart peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine intensify. Although Lavrov will participate in the talks, Ukraine was not among the invited parties for the event, which serves as a precursor to a leaders’ summit later this year in Miami.
