New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill sent a formal letter putting the state’s port and terminal operators on notice that importing Russian diesel violates federal law and carries civil and criminal consequences. Sherrill, who previously called the supply arrangement between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin “corrupt and illegal,” wrote that New Jersey ports “must not be complicit” in transactions that help finance Russia’s war against Ukraine rather than lower domestic costs. Economist Steve Hanke criticized the move, saying Sherrill is “out to lunch.”
