The shipping company reported no injuries or environmental damage after the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker was struck by unidentified objects on its port side on Oct 30, producing an onboard fire. Nakilat confirmed Sunday that the Al Mayeda, one of the world’s largest LNG carriers at 266,000 m³, disabled its automatic identification system after the incident as it returned to Qatar for damage assessments.
The strike occurred about 40 nautical miles south of Iran’s Lavan Island, despite reports that Pakistan had secured a safety guarantee for the ship from Iranian authorities hours before the attack. The incident was part of a cluster of at least four tanker strikes between Oct 29 and Oct 30, contributing to a record of more than 30 confirmed attacks on shipping in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waterways during October.
