A U.S. military command provided an update Saturday on the scale of its maritime operations to prevent shipments of sanctioned goods to and from Iran. U.S. Central Command announced that naval forces have redirected 144 commercial vessels as of Oct 31 to ensure compliance with a blockade in the region, supported by the aircraft carrier USS George Washington and its MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters.
The total follows a series of intercepted voyages, including the Oct 29 diversion of the tanker DANDELION, which was carrying 490K barrels of Iranian liquefied petroleum gas obtained via a ship-to-ship transfer on Oct 26. Other disruptions include a reported incident with a dhow on Oct 29 and a tanker that aborted its voyage toward Iraq on Oct 30. These enforcement actions coincide with current negotiations between the U.S. and Iran concerning the administration of the Strait of Hormuz.
