Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy reported that three oil tankers were abandoned after they caught fire and exploded while striking sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The naval force said the incidents occurred over the last 24 hours in the waterway’s southern corridor, adding that the vessels were ‘rogue’ tankers that ignored warnings.
The IRGC alleged the tankers had disabled their radar and navigation systems to illegally transit the contaminated route. While the tankers did not report the incidents, the UK Maritime Trade Operations separately noted a vessel was on fire in the southern corridor of the strait on Thursday morning.
