President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv is prepared to discuss granting Moscow security assurances as part of a diplomatic settlement to end the war, marking a reversal in the Ukrainian leader’s previous stance. Zelenskyy stated he is open to any negotiation format and sensitive topics to ensure the peace process continues, though he emphasized that the US must remain the mediator. Trilateral talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine could be held as early as Nov 10, following the US midterm elections.
The diplomatic push includes proposed economic incentives from Washington to encourage President Vladimir Putin to negotiate, including the potential for US oil companies to return to ventures on Sakhalin Island and the Druzhba pipeline. While the Kremlin has expressed openness to US business partners and suggested the creation of demilitarized zones in the Donbas, it stated that the peace talks will not slow its current military operations and will exclude European representatives from the negotiating table.
