The demand for Maduro's release comes after the Venezuelan leader and his wife have remained in U.S. custody for 9 months since their capture in Caracas in January. In his wider address, Lavrov called for Cuba's removal from the U.S. state sponsors of terrorism list and accused EU leaders of abetting the spread of nazism. He further asserted that Russia's goals for its special military operation in Ukraine will be achieved and concluded that the UN Secretary-General must remain impartial.
