A 12.25% drop in the SOX index on Nov 5 left the chip sector with a total drawdown of 38% and marked the second-largest single day percentage decline in the index’s history. The slump is the most severe for the group since March 16, 2020, when the index fell 15.90% during the start of the pandemic.
The selloff reversed a gain of nearly 100% the semiconductor group had made during the second quarter. The decline coincided with the Nasdaq breaking technical support levels and the VVIX volatility index jumping 45 points, while investors attributed the move to mechanical selling and fears surrounding new AI regulations.
