The North Carolina State Board of Elections authorized additional voting time at several polling locations on Tuesday to compensate for malfunctions with voter check-in systems and printers. Following an emergency session, the agency granted a 45-minute window for further voting at the Tabor City Courthouse in Columbus County and smaller extensions for four other counties, setting the updated reporting time for statewide results at 8:15 p.m. ET.
The decision to push back the tallies for the state’s Senate race and other midterm contests follows petitions from the Republican National Committee to keep polls open in Tabor City to ensure ballot access. The state board had previously indicated that result reporting could be delayed by up to an hour from the original 7:30 p.m. closing time due to the technical failures.
