The New York Times has updated its estimates for the 2026 midterm elections, projecting that Democrats will win the U.S. House popular vote by a margin of 12 points. If realized, this would be the largest popular vote lead for the Democratic party in the House since 1976 and would exceed the 10.5 point margin recorded in 2008.
The forecast follows a projection from Decision Desk HQ that Democrats will secure control of the chamber, ending the Republican majority. The final model from the firm estimated that Democrats would win 241 seats to the Republicans’ 194, and projected a 64% probability that Democrats would also take the Senate with 52 seats.
