Republicans finished Texas early voting with a 1.6 percentage point lead over Democrats based on primary participation across in-person and mail ballots, down from early margins of 8 points in 2024, 9 points in 2022 and 5.6 points in 2020. Two large counties that are more than 90% Hispanic, Hidalgo and Webb, surpassed their total 2024 presidential early vote counts, while Montgomery, the state’s most Republican large county, reached 77% of its 2024 early turnout, Cook Political Report analyst Dave Wasserman noted. The Washington Post reported that the final tally of 7.4 million early ballots gave Democrats an apparent turnout lead and leaves Republicans relying more heavily on independent voters in key races.
