Emmanuel Macron concluded his diplomatic tour of the Gulf in Riyadh, having reached agreements to ensure France’s energy security during a domestic crisis. The French president secured an extension of additional diesel shipments from Saudi Arabia and an agreement with Qatar for 2 TWh of gas per month throughout the winter. These measures aim to mitigate soaring fuel costs and prevent shortages caused by the U.S.-Iran war and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where Macron noted shipping costs have increased tenfold as uninsured vessels avoid the route.
