The race for the open Illinois seat in the upper chamber of Congress concluded on Nov 4 with a win for the state’s current lieutenant governor. The victory for Juliana Stratton ensures that for the first time in the Senate’s 237 year history, three Black women will serve as senators concurrently. Stratton also becomes the fifth Black woman ever to be elected to the body.
The Democratic candidate won the contest against Republican Don Tracy, maintaining party control of the seat previously held by the retiring Dick Durbin. Stratton’s win also means that Illinois will be represented by two women of color in the chamber, as she will serve alongside incumbent Senator Tammy Duckworth.
