Israel’s Arab-led Joint List officially recommended opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot to form a government during consultations at President Isaac Herzog’s residence, lifting his endorsements to 67 of the 120 Knesset seats against 46 for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The 11 seat grouping said it hopes its endorsement will produce a minority government backed by Arab lawmakers as a “protective bloc” from outside the cabinet. When Herzog asked whether the faction would pull its support during a major military conflict involving Iran or Hamas, Joint List chairman Yousef Jabareen said, “The public did not elect us to topple Netanyahu only to bring him back,” while senior lawmaker Ahmad Tibi added that the party is “not providing a ‘safety net’ only to bring down the government two or three months later.”
