The party of Israeli opposition leader Avigdor Lieberman intends to nominate former army chief Gadi Eisenkot as the head of the country’s future government. Lieberman stated that Benjamin Netanyahu must step down and declared he would not join a coalition led by the current prime minister, refusing the option of a power-sharing arrangement where the premiership would rotate between leaders.
The decision comes after Likud mayors and other party members attempted to recruit Lieberman for a unity government, with some suggesting a rotating leadership role to secure his alliance. Lieberman rejected the overtures, stating he does not trust Netanyahu. Additionally, Lieberman pledged his support for Yair Lapid to serve as Speaker of the Knesset.
