President Donald Trump said the US is “very close” to securing a trade agreement with Canada and has “the concept of a very good deal” that would eliminate Canadian tariffs on American agricultural exports and have Canada build and fully fund the Keystone pipeline. Speaking to reporters Sunday after a call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said the pipeline’s route “has largely been determined” by the US and that “our farmers will have to pay no tariffs” under the agreement.
Carney said earlier Sunday that he had a “good conversation” with Trump building on constructive talks over the outlines of a mutually beneficial deal, and that negotiating teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver an agreement that creates jobs and respects Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty. Those statements followed a Friday interview with Politico in which Carney said Canadians were tired of US diplomatic provocations, remarked that “Canada’s the bear,” and stated he was prepared to wait out Trump’s term rather than lock in unfavorable terms.
