The Senator from Vermont is mobilizing fellow Democrats to donate to Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to counteract outside spending in the state’s general election. Bernie Sanders transferred $1 million of his own funds to El-Sayed’s campaign and has already raised $300,000 from other members of Congress to further bolster the Democratic candidate’s finances.
The intervention follows plans by AIPAC to provide up to $9 million to a super PAC supporting Republican Mike Rogers, a rare decision to back a Republican in a competitive general election. Additionally, the Great Lakes Conservatives Fund, an AIPAC proxy, spent $8 million on advertisements attacking El-Sayed’s loyalty to the United States, while the Empowering Black America PAC aired ads highlighting racial tensions in Detroit.
