The six day humanitarian truce in Ukraine’s Kherson region ended Sunday night after Russia refused an offer to extend the pause, Ukrainian officials said. Ahead of the 10:59 p.m. expiration, Ukraine’s military also evacuated 167 residents, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility, from areas at risk on the Ukrainian held right bank of the Dnipro River, the General Staff said.
The localized ceasefire, the longest unbroken truce of the war since 2022, began Oct 27 following mediation by US First Lady Melania Trump and an appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin by Pope Leo XIV. During the pause, Russian and Ukrainian teams delivered food and medicine to Russian occupied Oleshky on the east bank and evacuated more than 750 trapped residents via Anapa, Russia, and Gomel, Belarus, from where 11 buses carried civilians back into Ukraine and four buses headed to Russia.
