Democratic challenger Scott Colom has taken a narrow lead in the battle for Mississippi’s U.S. Senate seat, moving ahead of Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by 28 votes. With more than 95% of the vote reported, AP tallies place Colom at 462,779 votes (49%) and Hyde-Smith at 462,751 votes (48.9%). The race is currently too close to call as election officials continue to process remaining ballots.
The contest is an outlier for a state that was R+23 in 2024, leading the New York Times to rate the race as a toss-up. Approximately 45,449 votes remain outstanding, including provisional ballots that traditionally shift toward Democratic candidates in Mississippi. Following the lead change, the prediction market Kalshi adjusted Scott Colom’s win probability to 62%.
