The S&P 500 climbed 121.87 points to finish at 7,690.79 on Wednesday, ending the session 1.61% higher as investors reacted to the conclusion of the U.S. midterm elections. The broader U.S. equity market added more than $1.1 trillion in total value, a rally supported by the Democratic party’s victory in both the House and Senate and Donald Trump’s prompt acceptance of the results, which analysts said reduced the risk of a prolonged political conflict.
The gains were heavily weighted toward mega-cap technology, with Microsoft and Apple adding about $515 billion, accounting for approximately 46% of the total dollar gains. In contrast, chip stocks trended lower, led by Nvidia, which fell 3.2% and lost $158 billion in market capitalization. Of the stocks that traded, about 2,400 rose while 1,066 fell as markets began adjusting to the prospects of a divided government.
