The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slid to its lowest closing level since April on Nov 4, falling another 3% to reach a point about 30% below its June peak. The widespread decline saw 25 of the 30 stocks in the index end the session in negative territory, with the 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF SOXL dropping 9%.
The chip selloff occurred despite a rally in other large-cap tech shares, which pushed the Nasdaq up 1.42% to 25,732.53. Gains in Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple, which rose between 6.3% and 7.3%, outweighed losses from chipmakers including Nvidia, which fell 1.3%.
