The controversy follows Federal Election Commission filings showing an AIPAC-affiliated super PAC spent $94,000 to oppose El-Sayed. Other groups have spent more to back his candidacy, including the CAIR-backed Unity & Justice Fund, which paid $400,000 for canvassing in Dearborn. El-Sayed has also raised $350,000 from a fundraiser organized by Osama Siblani and $252,000 through the Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee.
