Approximately 300,000 barrels of fuel are being loaded onto a ship heading for the American Northeast this week to mark the first U.S. import of Russian diesel since 2022. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced the 40,000 tonne cargo will depart October 22 under a trade agreement with the Trump administration. Vladimir Putin told U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff that global diesel prices fell 5-6% following the announcement, adding that more vessels will follow once final financial arrangements are completed.
President Donald Trump indefinitely waived sanctions on Russian energy buyers to lower domestic fuel costs and maintain dialogue regarding a potential peace deal for Ukraine. While Russia also resumed diesel shipments to Turkey and Brazil from its Primorsk terminal, analysts describe the U.S. shipments as a diplomatic victory for Putin rather than a supply solution. The 40,000 tonne cargo represents only 1.5 to 2 hours of total U.S. distillate consumption.
