The total volume of federal borrowing in the US reached a new peak of $40.5T on Oct 27, creating a per-capita liability of $118,175 for every resident in the country. If current borrowing trends persist, the government’s total debt will cross $41T by early January 2027.
To service these obligations, the government now spends $3B a day on interest payments. The balance is currently growing by nearly $7B daily, with the most recent $1T added in just over 3 months, a sharp contrast to the 192 years it took to accumulate the first $1T of US debt.
