Direct bidders absorbed 31.6% of the US Treasury’s $13 billion long term debt sale after indirect buyers came in 7 percentage points light. The auction for 20 year bonds cleared at a high yield of 5.469%, marking the highest level for the security since its return to the market in 2020. This is the fourth of the last seven coupon auctions to be graded as soft or weak.
The auction results tailed the pre-sale when-issued yield of 5.460% by 0.9 basis points, but the bid-to-cover ratio rose to 2.73 from a previous 2.57. Primary dealers were allocated 10.3% of the issuance and indirect bidders took 58.2%. The high yield was higher than the 5.420% stop recorded during the prior sale of the same maturity.
