Shares of semiconductor companies plummeted on Thursday as a wave of selling hit the artificial intelligence trade. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) fell 12.3%, the largest single-day percentage decline for the benchmark since the 2020 market crash, while the 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF, SOXL, slid 39% during the session.
The selloff wiped more than $400 billion from Nvidia’s market capitalization as its shares dropped 9.3%. The crash brought Nvidia’s valuation to 15.2x forward earnings, which is now lower than the multiples of consumer staples firms such as Procter & Gamble (23.7x) and Colgate-Palmolive (24.8x). The SOX index has returned nearly all of the gains from its near 100% rally in the second quarter and is currently 39% below its peak, with 57% of its member stocks in oversold territory.
