The build-up reverses a draw-down that saw total tanker numbers across Europe and the Middle East fall to 161 aircraft by late September from a wartime peak of 232. While tanker levels in the US Central Command (CENTCOM) region remained above 100, assets were primarily shifted to bases in Qatar and the UAE following a ceasefire. These reductions previously led analysts to conclude that the US was unlikely to resume strikes in the near term due to the depletion of air-defense munitions and political pressures surrounding US midterm elections.
