TankerTrackers said Iranian footage of the burning tanker “appears to be doctored,” noting that a fire of the depicted size would still be burning and that no such fire appeared in FIRMS satellite fire data over the past two nights. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy had claimed a crude oil supertanker struck a naval mine while leaving the Strait of Hormuz through an unauthorized route. TankerTrackers disputed the mine claim, saying Gem No. 2 was anchored in busy waters.
All 22 Indian crew members aboard Gem No. 2 were rescued and are safe after the incident off Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE, the Indian consulate in Dubai said Sunday. Separately, UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that an outbound tanker was struck on its port side by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on October 10, causing a fire. Its crew was safe, while damage and environmental impact remained unassessed.
