Mullin alleged that Belgal rammed two ICE vehicles and accelerated toward officers, and rejected calls from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul to halt immigration enforcement. “No, we're not putting a pause on enforcement,” he said. Mamdani, who called for ICE to be abolished, said: “There is no explanation for agents firing that many rounds with a child in the car.”
The NYPD released body camera footage Friday from the first city officers to arrive after the shooting. They responded to a 911 call and transported Belgal to a hospital; the NYPD said it was not involved in the shooting. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are investigating. A federal judge separately blocked Belgal's deportation and restricted further transfers while his detention challenge is pending, but did not order his release.
